College Preparation
At the high school level, college preparation focuses on solidifying a robust academic foundation, deepening college awareness, and honing essential skills and habits that will benefit students in their future academic and career endeavors. A rigorous curriculum remains a cornerstone of this preparation, offering advanced coursework in core subjects such as math, science, English, and social studies, as well as opportunities for dual enrollment and Advanced Placement (AP) classes to ensure students are well-prepared for the challenges of higher education. Additionally, both in regular classes and through our Advisory period, we emphasize the development of effective study techniques, time management, and organizational skills, alongside strong reading comprehension and advanced writing abilities. Finally, all juniors take College Prep 101, which provides our students with a dedicated time and opportunity to prepare for the college admissions process.

ACT and SAT Exams
The ACT and SAT are the two primary standardized tests used for college admissions in the United States, each with distinct characteristics. The ACT comprises four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing section, emphasizing a broad range of academic skills, including science reasoning. The SAT, on the other hand, focuses on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math, with an optional Essay, emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The ACT is often considered more straightforward, with questions that reflect high school curricula closely, while the SAT is known for its emphasis on vocabulary and complex problem-solving. Both tests are widely accepted by colleges and universities, but they cater to different strengths and test-taking strategies. Students often choose the test that best aligns with their skills and preferences, and some may take both to maximize their college admission opportunities. Ultimately, both the ACT and SAT play crucial roles in the college admissions process, providing institutions with valuable insights into a student's readiness for higher education. Rigorous Teaching and Learning
Rigorous teaching and learning at our high school is characterized by a dynamic and challenging educational environment where high expectations and deep engagement are the norms. As an open-access institution, we welcome any student who wishes to attend and require every student to engage in Pre-AP and AP coursework. In alignment with our Core Instructional Model, rigorous instruction involves Lesson Design, incorporating clear learning objectives, differentiated strategies, and meaningful assessments to monitor student progress. Within the Lesson Experience, teachers employ active, student-centered instructional structures (WICOR) that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Furthermore, teachers analyze evidence of learning collected during their lessons to ensure that they continuously reflect on and refine their practices through data tracking and analysis, collaboration with peers, and effective communication of progress. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are not only meeting but exceeding academic standards, preparing them for the demands of higher education and future academic challenges.
Comprehensive Student Supports
At our high school, we support the success of our students by implementing a multifaceted approach. This begins with offering a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, social, and emotional needs, ensuring that each student receives the guidance necessary to thrive. We integrate AVID strategies, promoting skills in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR), to foster a college-ready mindset and empower students with essential tools for academic success. Additionally, our targeted interventions and after-school tutoring program provide personalized support for students who need extra help, ensuring that no student falls behind. Through our Advisory program, we also build intentional support time into our schedule. This holistic approach ensures that all students receive the comprehensive support they need to excel academically and personally.
Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are fundamental to a college prep high school because they provide students with rigorous academic challenges that mirror the demands of college-level coursework. These courses enable students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills essential for success in higher education. By engaging in AP classes, students are exposed to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of subject matter, which not only prepares them for the academic rigor of college but also enhances their college applications, making them more competitive candidates. Additionally, successful performance in AP exams can lead to college credit, allowing students to save on tuition costs and potentially graduate earlier. Overall, the inclusion of AP coursework in a college prep curriculum ensures that students are well-equipped to handle the expectations of college academics and fosters a culture of high achievement and academic excellence.
