College Preparation
At the middle school level, college preparation focuses on establishing a solid academic foundation, fostering college awareness, and nurturing essential skills and habits that will benefit students in the long run. A rigorous curriculum is a cornerstone of this preparation, offering rigorous coursework in core subjects such as math, science, English, and social studies to ensure students are well-prepared for the challenges of high school. Additionally, middle schools emphasize the development of effective study techniques, time management, and organizational skills, alongside strong reading comprehension and writing abilities.
Rigorous Teaching and Learning
Rigorous teaching and learning at the middle school level is characterized by a dynamic and challenging educational environment where high expectations and deep engagement are the norms. In alignment with our Core Instructional Model, rigorous instruction involves Lesson Design, incorporating clear learning objectives, differentiated strategies, and meaningful assessments to monitor student progress. Within the Lesson Experience, teachers employ active, student-centered instructional structures (WICOR) that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Furthermore, teachers analyze evidence of learning collected during their lessons to ensure that they continuously reflect on and refine their practices through data tracking and analysis, collaboration with peers, and effective communication of progress. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are not only meeting but exceeding academic standards, preparing them for future educational challenges.
Comprehensive Student Supports
At the middle school level, we support the success of our students by implementing a multifaceted approach. This begins with offering a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, social, and emotional needs, ensuring that each student receives the guidance necessary to thrive. We integrate AVID strategies, promoting skills in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR), to foster a college-ready mindset and empower students with essential tools for academic success. Additionally, our targeted interventions and after-school tutoring program provide personalized support for students who need extra help, ensuring that no student falls behind. In our Tutorial program, we also build intentional support time into our schedule. This holistic approach ensures that all students receive the comprehensive support they need to excel academically and personally.
Character Education
At the middle school level, our character education program is designed to develop well-rounded, ethical, and responsible students through a structured, grade-specific curriculum. In 5th grade, students engage in a foundational course that introduces essential character traits such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and empathy, fostering a strong moral compass and positive peer relationships. The 6th-grade Community Studies course emphasizes the importance of collaboration, diversity, and civic engagement, encouraging students to participate in service projects and community-building initiatives. By 7th grade, students focus on Leadership Development, where they cultivate communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork skills through practical projects and mentorship opportunities. Finally, the 8th-grade Ethical Reasoning course challenges students to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, deepening their understanding of justice, fairness, integrity, and ethical responsibility. Through debates, case studies, and reflective exercises, students enhance their critical thinking and decision-making abilities, preparing them to make positive contributions to their school and broader community.
